Soil Degradation: The Silent Crisis Beneath Our Feet

Soil Degradation: The Silent Crisis Beneath Our Feet “The nation that destroys its soil destroys itself.” Famous quote by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Soil is one of thre most valuable resource we have beneath every forest, farm, village, and city it lies, yet ignored resource on Earth. It silently supports life, nourishes crops, stores water, filters pollutants, and sustains ecosystems. Today, soil degradation has emerged as one of the greatest environmental threats facing humanity, quietly endangering food security, biodiversity, and climate stability across the globe. Soil degradation refers to the decline in land quality caused by human activities and natural disturbances. It represents the loss of the soil’s physical, chemical, biological, and ecological properties. According to environmental studies, more than 40% of agricultural land worldwide is already degraded, creating serious concerns about future food supplies and environmental sustainability.   The alarming ris...

Healthy Oceans for Future Posterity

Healthy Oceans for Future Posterity As Dr. Sylvia Earle said, “The ocean is the heart of our planet.” This quote means that oceans are as important to the Earth as the heart is to the human body because oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and are essential for human survival. They provide food, oxygen, transportation, and help regulate the climate. However, today our oceans are suffering from pollution caused by plastic waste, oil spills, industrial chemicals, and untreated sewage. Ocean pollution is not only harming marine life but also threatening human health and the future of our planet. One of the biggest causes of ocean pollution is plastic waste. Every year, millions of tons of plastic enter the seas. Sea animals often mistake plastic for food, which can lead to injury or death. Oil spills and chemical waste also damage coral reefs and destroy the natural habitats of marine creatures. There is a famous proverb: “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors...

Pollution : Air, Water, Noise and Mind

Pollution : Air, Water, Noise and Mind Lately, I read a quote in The Times of India newspaper that urged me to think about how pollution is connected not only to the environment but also to one’s mindset. This inspired me to write about how pollution is not just around us, but within us. Most often, pollution is described as an environmental crisis, but it is equally a human crisis. Today, we are surrounded by noise, breathing contaminated air, drinking polluted water, and gradually allowing negativity to pollute our minds. The damage is not only external; it is deeply internal as well. Air pollution, caused by vehicle emissions and industrial smoke, is responsible for serious respiratory diseases and global warming. Water pollution, driven by plastic waste and chemical dumping, destroys aquatic life and threatens human health. As the environmentalist Jacques Cousteau wisely said, “The water cycle and the life cycle are one.” When we poison our rivers and oceans, we ultimate...
